Prof. dr. J.J. Weening
Professor of Pathology AMC

Jan J. Weening (1950) is Professor of Pathology at the University of Amsterdam. He studied medicine in Groningen (NL) and received his PhD degree there in 1980.

After his studies he performed research in renal pathology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Since then he worked as a pathologist at the LUMC (Leiden) and the UMCG (Groningen) and he was head of the Pathology Department of the AMC (1991 to 2007).

He is also working as a pathologist at the Hospital Tergooi (Blaricum, NL) and is a renal pathology consultant for the Erasmus MC.

His main scientific contributions are in the field of autoimmune glomerulonephritis.

He has long been active in the International Society of Nephrology, including as Secretary General and President. He was associate editor of Kidney International.

Jan Weening is one of the organizers and teachers of the Dutch Boerhaave course Praktische nefropathologie and teacher of the European Renal Pathology Course.

For the Dutch Kidney Foundation, Jan Weening was a member of the Scientific Council for two terms and from 2011 to 2015 chairman of the International Advisory Board of the Dutch Kidney Foundation.
