General

Is EURenalPath a commercial company?

No, EURenalPath is a collaboration between three Dutch University Medical Centers. Our main mission is to improve the quality of diagnostic nephropathology, without the purpose of making a profit.

Does it matter to which center of EURenalPath I submit the kidney biopsies?

You are free to choose to which center of EURenalPath you submit the material. We assure the same high quality service of EURenalPath in all three centers. Through our collaboration and mutual consultation, we can guarantee the continuity and the quality of the renal biopsy diagnosis.

Which pathologist is involved in the examination of my biopsies?

Your kidney biopsy will be examined by the nephropathologists working in the center to which you have submitted the material. Exceptions are the mutual replacement during vacations/conferences and the mutual consultation of difficult cases.

Sending material

How can I submit fresh kidney biopsies?

To submit your fresh kidney biopsies you can order a free kit with transport solutions. We ask you to take at least two kidney biopsies. One biopsy can be put in the vial with Michel’s transport medium (for IF). The second and possibly third biopsy is to be put in the vial with formalin (for light microscopy and EM). You can send the package via the usual parcel delivery service of your hospital to us. The detailed instructions for sending fresh kidney biopsies can be found here.

You can also choose to send the kidney biopsies wrapped in a saline-soaked gauze packed in a small, sealed plastic bag in a container with melting ice to us by courier. In this case, you do not need to split the different kidney biopsies for LM, IF and EM.

Which stainings are performed for light microscopy?

Your kidney biopsy will be cut on several levels and will be stained routinely for H&E, PAS and Jones. Depending on the clinical problem, additional stainings can be performed, including Congo red, Azan trichrome and immunohistochemistry. No extra costs will be charged for these additional stainings.

Which stainings are performed for immunofluorescence?

We will perform immunofluorescence for IgG, IgM, IgA, C1q, C3c, fibrinogen, kappa and lambda for all cases. Depending on the clinical problem, we can perform additional immunofluorescence for IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, PLA2R and albumin.

Is electron microscopy performed routinely?

Electron microscopy (EM) is performed only after your permission. On the application form you can indicate whether you wish to have carried out direct EM examination or only after it has been discussed with you. You will receive the results of EM within five business days after we have obtained your permission.
